On "Junipers Near Colinet" ...

Goudies's inimitable style brings the Colinet landscape to life in this foreboding portrait of a harsh land. The truncated junipers trees are more like shrubs, and the straggling few that manage to get their heads above their neighbors are whipped by the wind into bizarre sticks, bearing branches along only one side. The grass beneath is flattened by the wind, and the sky rumbles heavily along above. Scott Goudie has interpreted the landscape in many parts of this province, from Labrador south to St. Mary's Bay. He brings to everything he does a real feeling for the life that breathes beneath the land's punished surface. Not the animal life, but the tangible personality of the land itself, something we understand in places like Newfoundland.
