Marcia Harris

Marcia Harris was born in Gaspe, Quebec Canada. Her interest in art started at a young age. In grade twelve she won a provincial art competition called Canadian Poster Challenge Contest, where she was flown to Ottawa and received the exciting honour of meeting her Majesty the Queen. During her early twenties Harris worked as a freelance artist, working at jobs ranging from business logos to wall murals. By her mid twenties Harris realized that she wanted to persue a serious fine art career.

In 1999, Harris moved with her husband to Kelowna, B.C. In 2000, she enrolled into the Fine Arts Program at Okanagan University College and graduated with distinction in 2004. While in school she earned several awards - the Helen Pitt Award in 2002, Citizenship Award in 2004, the President's Purchase Award in 2004 for one of her pieces in the final grad show, and 2004 President's Purchase Award for one of her screen prints.

"My work is about search and discovery, both metaphorically and literally. I want the viewer to be engaged beyond the picture plane, stimulating a mood that evokes memory. The content of my work consists of a collection of images that I've seen, imagined or appropriated. The combination of these facets also relates to the context of my work in that I combine experience and imagination along with aspects of reality to create imagery that expresses my individuality." - Marcia Harris
